Her hair was lush—full, dark, thick and long. Prior to her arrival in Lagos, she had always worn it in either cornrows or black rubber threads crafted fortnightly by the deft fingers of her older cousin Bola back in the village. The Lovers Muse

The eager groom’s wide grin mirrored the excitement in the gathering as he danced into his bride’s father’s compound, accompanied by five of his very good friends. They were all dressed in white, but the man of the day stood out unmistakably with the elaborate silver embroidery on his agbada—the  flowing wide-sleeved robe worn by men—and  the proud way his blue double-flapped hand-loomed cap (fila abeti aja) sat on his head, unshaken by the rhythmic moves his body made to the drumbeats as everyone cheered him on. Daddy’s Little Girl

It feels just like yesterday when daddy and I would rehearse our wedding day father-daughter dance to Nel Oliver’s Babygirl and him walking me down the aisle. It was our Saturday morning ritual during my childhood. Tife and Tito usually got the bulk of the chores, being my two older twin brothers. My only job in the house was to wake up each day. It was the last CDS meeting before the batch B passing out, and Environmental CDS members had assumed Dara would take up Chika’s position, being the Vice President and already familiar with the president’s roles. She declined, however, giving a busy schedule as excuse, what with her private tutoring and heavy workload at the school.

After the election meeting, Chika caught up with her on her way out and asked, puzzled, “What was that about? You know you deserved to be president.” Continue reading
